2016 was an active and productive year for the Vermont Technology Alliance, as we continued our efforts to support, promote and grow technology-focused jobs and businesses in Vermont.

Here are some year-in-review highlights:

Membership and Community

We welcomed 40 new members this year, from individuals to large companies.

Vermont Technology Alliance’s LinkedIn group grew to more than 1,300 followers – including many from outside the state.

Our Twitter followers also grew to more than 850

Projects and Events

Our tech job recruitment planning and outreach drove a number of actions in 2016, and we continued to present and participate in social, networking and education events.

Survey

We asked businesses to participate in a survey about their tech hiring experiences and perspectives. Overall, the results showed that businesses had plans to hire more than 3,000 tech employees in 2016, but reported problems filling those positions. Vermont’s quality of life led the list of attributes that help attract candidates.

Tech Jobs Report

The Vermont Technology Alliance released a report highlighting the size and impact of tech jobs in Vermont: Vermont’s Tech Employment – The Hidden Driver of Our Economic Growth.

The vtTA produced the report to draw attention to the contributions of tech jobs to Vermont’s economy, the economic growth potential they represent for the state’s future, and to outline public policy priorities that will help us expand our tech economy.

Career Center

We launched a Career Center on the vtTA website, listing jobs from our member businesses. It has grown to become a top resource for finding an opening with a growing Vermont tech business, with 150 to 200 tech and non-tech jobs posted.

Candidates Roundtable

It was an election year, and the vtTA was in the mix hosting a roundtable discussion broadcast live with the three candidates for governor discussing technology, innovation and Vermont’s Economy, in partnership with BTV Ignite, Seven Days and Vermont PBS. The conversation focused on the public policy priorities identified in vtTA’s tech jobs report, and was part of Burlington’s first InnovationWeek.

Lunch & Learns

We continued to sponsor Lunch & Learn sessions on topics of interest to the tech community, including Vermont’s broadband progress, Vermont-Quebec business opportunities and Insights into Growing a Tech Business in Vermont (also part of InnovationWeek).

Tech Jam & Tech Jam Awards

The vtTA was an organizing partner and participant in the 10th Vermont Tech Jam event. We partnered with BTV Ignite and Seven Days to once again present the Vermont Tech Jam Awards, which this year expanded to four categories. After collecting 78 nominations, five finalists in each of four categories, and nearly 900 votes, the winners were announced at Tech Jam.

Social & Networking Events

We held Bio & Tech Beer social events with our friends from the Vermont Biosciences Alliance in the summer, at year-end and in conjunction with the annual RosettaCommons meeting.

Once again we set sail on Lake Champlain this summer for our annual vtTA Sunset Dinner Cruise networking event.

And we partnered with SolarCity for a social event at SolarCity’s Operations Center, which included an opportunity to check out some Tesla autos.

Collaboration and Outreach

We continued to connect, collaborate and outreach across the state in support of Vermont’s tech business sector.

Vermont-Quebec Business

The vtTA partnered with The Vermont-Quebec Enterprise Initiative to promote business collaborations, partnerships and opportunities between Vermont and Quebec. A tech-focused session was held in February and then we reciprocated with a road trip to Montreal in June to connect Vermont and Quebec businesses, and a Lunch & Learn session also was held.

Regional Meetings

We continued outreach meetings in the state to meet those in different regions who are interested in tech business and job development, including meetings in Addison County and Central Vermont. The meetings were an opportunity for attendees to learn about the vtTA and to discuss tech economic development and job recruitment.

Job Fairs

We represented vtTA member businesses and shared hundreds of job openings when we participated in the Central Vermont Job Fair and the Vermont Career Connections Job Fair.

TechHire

The Vermont Technology Alliance joined with other organizations in partnering with the City of Burlington to be named a TechHire city by the White House.

70x2025

The vtTA participated in a working group organized by the Vermont State Colleges, focused on having 70% of Vermont's working-age adults attain a postsecondary degree or credential of value by 2025. A new organization, the 70x2025 VT Partnership, was formed to work on the goal.

Advocacy

We worked with state leaders, Vermont Legislators, task forces and study groups on issues important to Vermont’s tech community.

Legislature

We met with legislators to discuss the vtTA and Vermont’s tech economy, and issues important to members such as telling Vermont’s tech story, broadband, and education.

We provided testimony that influenced proposed legislation concerning independent contractors. Unfortunately, it failed to pass in 2016, but set the stage for action this year.

Economic Development

The vtTA and members provided input into the development of an economic development marketing plan, and worked with state officials on outreach and and information for potential tech business relocation and expansion opportunities

Communications and Media

The vtTA generated and shared news about Vermont, the tech economy and tech businesses in the state.
